Insomniac Design was selected to re- imagine and modernize a suite of web- based tools and products that enable the collection, analysis and dissemination of longitudinal health and genomic data, amongst other goals. 

APHL engaged Insomniac Design to build the website and data repository for their NewSTEPS (Newborn Screening Technical assistance and Evaluation Program) initiative, to ensure that states can adequately evaluate, analyze, and benchmark the performance of their tests and the quality of their newborn screening programs.

Newborn Health Screening

APHL engaged Insomniac Design to build the website and data repository for their NewSTEPS initiative, to ensure that state health departments can adequately evaluate, analyze, and benchmark the performance of newborn screening tests and the quality of programs.

Centralized Health Department Platform

NewSTEPs is a national newborn screening resource center designed to provide data, technical assistance, and training to newborn screening programs and assist states with quality improvement initiatives. 

We conceptualized a web platform to collect and provide data, offer technical and educational program resources, and assist states with quality improvement initiatives — all requiring harmonization of complex screening activities through innovative technology.

Data Repository

The NEWSteps platform offers newborn screening resources, news, trending-data visualizations, online toolkits, webinars, events, and more. A vast Data Repository acts a central source to contribute and analyze data around a number of newborn health screening factors — where state and local health departments can submit newborn screening data across a variety of specific health indicators.

Ease of Use

We built tools and features like the Confirmed Cases Form to make it easy for public health professionals to record and document data, and track cases against trends and demographic information that can shed light on broader newborn health indicators.

Quality Indicators

Features like the Quality Indicators Form enable data collection that allows researchers to compare key information across an array of eight specific health indicators, so that health professionals and the public alike can better understand the range of relevant factors on newborn health and screening.

Content Platform

The platform is designed to expand content and data accessibility to everyone from researchers to parents, to help better understand newborn health issues around a specific set of health indicators. Partnering with APHL, we were truly able to achieve a one-stop shop for data and resources around newborn health screening.

Adorable Assets

Luckily, we had amazing creative inspiration for this project. Knowing that our platform would be used to support the health and screening of newborn babies made this a joy to work on.
